What You Should do to Get Your First Fiverr Sale

When you are new to the platform, it can be challenging to make money on Fiverr. So my first tip is to have patience and know that it will take a bit of effort on your part!

That being said, you will want to keep in mind the many reasons that freelancers struggle to make money…so that you can overcome them!

You will also need to know how the platform works. Below, you will find some information on how Fiverr ranks its gigs. You should consider implementing as many of these as you can. Additionally, you may want to revise them every few months to make sure that your gig is still the best people come across!

Here are some of the things you can do to get your first sale on Fiverr:

  • Create a stunning gig visual
  • Write compelling copy
  • Do competitive analysis
  • Provide references from outside clients
  • Promote your gig on social media
  • Enticing Initial Prices to grab customer attention(Who loves to pay more?)
  • Remain online often

Create a Stunning Gig Visual

The very first thing people will see is your gig visual. Luckily (for you!)this is also an area that most people don’t put much effort into.

It can be straightforward to create a visually appealing gig using Canva. I actually use Canva on this site and have made everything from infographics to logos with it! There is a bit of a learning curve if you are completely new to graphic design, but it is a simple tool to learn.

A good gig visual highlights your experience, and key details, or provides a compelling graphic related to the gig. Some people choose to put their photo on the image, which can make the gig seem more personal and easy to remember. I advise only doing this if you have a professional photo on hand and are combining it with some other details!

Write compelling copy

I can always tell when sellers have really spent time on their gig summary. They highlight the problem as well as the needs of the buyer. Typically this is done in an Easy-to-Read and conversational format. They often include bullet points and bolded fonts to draw the reader’s eye to key points.

The copy selection of your gig is your time to shine. You will want to highlight what makes working with you easier, better, or more valuable than your competition.

To write really compelling copy, you will want to think like a business. You can do this by asking yourself questions related to your motivations, experiences, and work ethic.

Do Competitive Analysis

Competitive analysis is always one of the first things you should do when starting a new business. This is especially true on Fiverr since it is up to the potential client to choose you over another gig!

Though it is possible to make money online without having much experience, you will need to work extremely hard to stand out. That is why I recommend scanning what your competitors are doing to help you create stunning visuals and write compelling copy that beats theirs.

It is straightforward to do a competitive analysis on Fiverr. Simply search for your gig and see which competitors come up first. These will be the people who stand out in the fiverr search results.

Just like on Google, these will be the people whose gigs are most relevant for the buyer! You will want to make your gigs competitive with these and, ideally, even better when it comes to visuals, copy, and price points.

Provide References from Outside Clients

You can provide references from outside clients to get your Fiverr profile rolling. It may lead to success if it is done correctly.

If you have built value with your customers, asking for a referral will make sense and be worthy. Plus, you know the right person to ask for, ask politely, and don’t beat about the bush. You should be clear about what you’re asking for; it will make the process worthy of your gig ranking.

Promote Your Gig on Social Media

Social media is an excellent medium to promote your fiver gig. There are plenty of chances that you can meet your first client here. So don’t forget to share your gig with like-minded people and peers.

Nowadays, almost all businesses have a social presence. It is not uncommon for businesses to scout budding talent from these platforms.

Promoting your Fiverr business via LinkedIn, Twitter, and other media where your potential clients may be waiting for you is an excellent idea. But it is not enough to only share the link of your profile on these forums. You will also want to do this in a more strategic way by focusing on your marketable skills.

Tips for promoting your Fiverr gig on social media:

  • Create a specific Business page to showcase your skills on different social media platforms
  • Post your example projects on each platform
  • Build a portfolio
  • Join groups related to your niche
  • Interact with people and discuss your niche
  • Share and write your own posts related to your niche to build an audience
  • Show your expertise to convert your audience into buyers

Enticing Initial Prices to Grab Customer Attention(Who loves to pay more?)

Starting with a low price is a magical trick to grab customers’ attention. Fiverr is a platform where many customers come to find services at low prices… It’s what they built their brand on! For beginners, Fiverr is a golden chance to gain some work experience.

That being said, if you are giving a technical service that is complex and demanding, you can charge a bit higher than market prices. In this case, working at a meager price makes your client suspicious and can lower your chances of being hired.

Be Active Online Often

On every freelancing platform, being active enhances your chances of getting your first order quickly.

If you want to remain active, I recommend downloading the Fiverr app on your phone. You can show you are active by keeping your device connected to the internet and setting your status to “available”

I will warn you, this is both a pro and con of working from home. The obvious upside is that you can provide a great client experience based on your responsiveness. Unfortunately, you will also be blurring the lines between your personal and professional life. Keep this in mind and make sure you take care of yourself!

What You Should NOT do to get your first Fiverr Sale

Now that we’ve covered some of the best ways to find clients… let’s talk about the worst ways! Unfortunately, I’ve seen a significant amount of people trying to use black hat methods to outrank their competition.

These kinds of accounts are very easy to spot and make it more difficult for legitimate freelancers. That is why you should NOT use the following methods:

  • Use fake gig comments/reviews
  • Spend endless money on ads
  • Promise results you can’t achieve

Use Fake Comments/ reviews

We all know that when you are making a purchasing decision, the first place to start your research is in the comment section.

As a buyer, I’ve seen so many accounts that purchase reviews! I see this as a massive red flag because it shows that the person is untrustworthy since they are already willing to lie to you.

These comments are very easy to spot because they all sound the same and tend to have a lot of grammar issues. The commenters’ profiles also tend to look a little spammy with fake photos and weird usernames.

Instead of using fake comments, I recommend that you address your newness in your gig description. You can easily explain why your rates are so competitive but how you are still a quality choice. Do not try to create fake credibility because this can lead to your account being banned!

Spend Endless Money on Ads

I believe spending money on ads can be really useful under the right circumstances. With so many of the first spots being filled by ads, you may need to invest a little to land your first gig.

That being said, I do think that the average person does not have much experience with marketing through ads. This can result in spending way more money than you should without getting a return on your investment.

Whenever you are investing money into your business, you should consider how you will make that money back. How much are you ready to spend, and what results do you expect to be?

Thinking through questions like these will help you spend less on ads if they are not effective for you. After all, if you spend $100 on ads but only obtain one or two purchasers… then you probably aren’t making any meaningful money!

Promise Results You Can’t Achieve

This should be obvious but do not promise anything that you cannot actually guarantee the buyer. It is much better to be in a position where you under-promise and over-deliver. Not only will an unhappy purchaser not buy from you again, but they will also leave you a horrible review.

As with many things in life, sometimes bad things stand out more than the positive. If I had to put a number to it, I would say you need to earn ten good reviews to outweigh that single awful review. It’s easier to avoid a negative review in the first place!

Final thoughts on how to get your first Fiverr sale

Selling as a freelancer on Fiverr is an excellent way to get some extra cash in your pocket. It’s a great way to try out something new, get valuable feedback, and network with other people in your industry.

If you are ready to get started, here are some Fiverr gigs that require no skill! These are a great way to get a few reviews under your belt and build up some credibility.

Take into account the tips I shared with you, put in the work, and you may see results sooner than you think! Best of luck on your freelancing journey!
